Happy Earth Day from Diaper Dekor

Posted by Admin

Happy Earth Day!

The staff here at Dékor is overwhelmed by the participation all over the Internet about promoting awareness and product giveaways surrounding Earth Day. As a parent for babies and smaller kids, it may be difficult to maintain an earth-friendly lifestyle. Our friends at Regal Lager give great green tips for parents and we also have a page on our website that outlines tips for green living at home, while traveling or in the workplace.  You don't have to be a green rock star to celebrate Earth Day. Just do it little by little in small acts such as recycling or picking up trash on your way to work, or walk to your local grocer to pick up those last minute items.

Have a great Earth Day and think about how YOU can help our environment.

The Truth About Diaper Rash

Posted by Admin

This may be an unsettling thought for you but diaper rash is a common occurrence for babies. Although the best methods in eliminating diaper rash are through preventative measures, you may want to know what you are up against, once it happens.

Types of Diaper Rash

Without getting overly technical and medical, there are two general types of diaper rash – the simple form of diaper rash and yeast infection diaper rash, which is a more severe form of diaper rash.

Simple (generic) Diaper Rash

Simple form diaper rash occurs when feces and urine are in contact with baby’s skin for an extended amount of time and it can also occur when there is a sudden change in baby’s diet. It typically has pink to red coloring. This rash commonly appears on the baby’s bottom and can also appear on the waist, stomach and thighs. Although diaper rash usually occurs when feces and urine are combined, urine is the common denominator for the problem. While urine may be mild alone, with feces it creates an imbalance in the baby’s skin, causing the baby’s sensitive skin to be susceptible to diaper rash.

How to get rid of diaper rash

For simple diaper rash, a topical cream with Zinc works well (Zinc may give a stinging sensation). Creams with Zinc often cures diaper rash within a day or two. For a milder cream, use creams that contain Lanolin. Creams containing Lanolin can prevent and may cure diaper rash.

Yeast Infection diaper rash

Yeast infection diaper rash has a red coloring and appears in patches. There may be small bumps and fluid filled blisters. In the beginning of the infection, the diaper rash commonly appears in the skin folds around the diaper area and spreads to baby’s bottom. A yeast diaper rash may require a prescription by your pediatrician.

Now that you know more about diaper rash, don’t go to extremes in changing your baby’s diaper after each time your baby urinates. A baby generally needs to be changed about eight times a day. If you have any questions or concerns about diaper rash, please feel free to leave a comment. Diaper rash is a widely discussed topic, so if you prefer more technical definitions visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaper_rash.

Not quite sure how a diaper rash looks? Here are some good examples of mild (but also extreme) diaper rash: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=diaper+rash+&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

*As some of these images are extreme cases of diaper rash, please note that some of the images are a bit unsightly.

Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers: What is the best choice for your baby?

Posted by Sharina

One of the most important decisions parents must make for their newborn is deciding whether to use cloth or disposable diapers. The factors parents or caregivers should consider when selecting the best diaper are: health, cost and its impact on the environment. The first and most important factor in selecting the best diaper should concern your baby’s health, especially their skin. A common problem in diapering is diaper rash. Here are a couple of quick facts about how diaper rashes occur:

• It happens frequently for babies with sensitive skin (be mindful of new materials on baby’s skin and chemicals used to clean or produce diapers)

• Extended exposure to waste (urine and stool)

• Diaper lacks circulation (usually occurs in disposable diapers)

• Yeast infections (certain antibiotics can contribute to the imbalance of helpful and harmful bacteria)

• Improper sanitation of cloth diapers

Parents, please note that diaper rashes are very common, but in order to avoid it, be sure to keep baby’s skin clean and dry by changing diapers as needed.

About Disposable Diapers

Some parents prefer disposable diapers because you can simply dispose diapers into a diaper pail. Disposable diapers are useful very useful when traveling. The positive features for disposable diapers are the highly absorbent materials used to contain wetness; the source is usually the absorbent gelling material (AGM) in the center of the diaper that contains moisture from the skin. Preventative measures for diaper rash in disposable diapers include changing the diapers frequently.Disposable diapers, however, have negative impacts on the environment. Disposable diapers do not break down quickly and therefore packs landfills with its waste. It is costly and associated with increasing time for potty training for children because they cannot feel wetness– due to absorbent material in disposable diapers. Additionally, the bleach used in disposable diapers contains potentially harmful chemicals to enhance their superabsorbent capabilities.

About Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers have evolved and become quite efficient in that they now have Velcro straps. The positive attributes for cloth diapers are no use of materials like AGM or dyes. These materials may affect a baby with sensitive skin. Cloth diapers can be cleaned in-house or by using a cleaning service, both options are proven more economical than disposable diapers.Although advocates of cloth diapers agree that disposable diapers negatively impact the environment, advocates of disposable diapers argue that the use of resources and energy – electricity and water negatively impacts the environment. Some diaper cleaning services use bleach to clean which can cause the same problems as bleached disposable diaper.Cloth diapers can also be messy, as you have to clean it yourself, or at the very least rid the waste material. As disposable diapers are ideal for traveling, cloth diapers are not because you must carry the soiled diapers with you. Diaper covers can be helpful but ultimately it may inconvenience the parent or caregiver.

And the Winner is…

We can’t tell you what is right for you and your baby. With any parenting decision you make you always want to consider health first and then rank which is more important to you – finances or the environment. There is a risk of diaper rash for both cloth and disposable diapers. Be sure to change diapers frequently or as needed and use lanolin cream to avoid diaper rashes. From these comparisons, we hope you can make a more informed decision on what is best for your family.
