Purchasing biodegradable refills is only the beginning of what you can do to improve the environment. Here are a couple of earth-friendly tips you can do at home, work or while traveling.
Work
- Turn off lights and equipment that are not in use
- Check for efficient thermostat settings
- Recycle and/or reuse paper and coffee filters
- Use PDFs instead of printing documents
Travel
- Carpool with co-workers or neighbors who work nearby
- Use mass transit when available
- Ensure your tires are at the correct air pressure
- Keep your car properly tuned
- Change your and air filter regularly
- Obey the posted speed limit
- Avoid hard, or "jackrabbit" starts
- Roll up your windows and use the A/C
Home
- Keep your heating and air conditioning system properly tuned
- Replace your light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent fixtures
- Wash your clothes in cold water
- Run the dishwasher only when full
- Turn computers and televisions off when your are not using them
- Use rechargeable batteries - Disposable batteries up in landfills, where they rust and leak poisonous contents like mercury into the soil
- Set your hot water heater to 120° or less, this is safer for young children as well
- Set your thermostat to 68° in the winter and 78° in the summer
- Use paperless billing
- Use clothes lines for drying clothes, attics are a good place to use if you don’t have room
- Recycle where available
